What are Build Days?

Untitled design (2)_edited.jpg

Hands-on construction experience! During weekly build days, we help professional builders construct homes for those in need. Build days typically run from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM, every day except Sundays and Tuesdays. The Spring 2024 Build Day schedule is on our GivePulse calendar (linked above).

During build days, we help professional builders construct homes for those in need. No prior construction experience is required!🏡🔨

  1. If this is the first time you have registered for this year, you must complete our online waiver: https://www.givepulse.com/group/membership/165149?k=3caeb3ed427b685f66db92031c121bcb

  2. Transportation to the build site is provided if needed. All volunteers will meet at the Student Center Plaza before being driven to the build site.

  3. Once you arrive to the build site, there is a mandatory safety meeting for all volunteers.

  4. Clothing requirements:

    • Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty

    • Shoes must be closed-toe

    • Pants are recommended. If shorts are worn, they should be an appropriate length

    • Shirts must be full-sized (no tank tops or cut-outs under the arms with sports bras or midriff showing)

    • No oversized jewelry

  5. Habitat provides all tools, equipment, and safety gear. Water and ice will also be provided. Remember to bring or wear your own sunscreen!

  6. If you are volunteering the whole day, there will be a lunch break from 12-1, and you must bring your own lunch.

  7. The site address where you'll be working will be emailed to you the Tuesday before the build day (it isn’t posted publicly).

  8. If/When posting pictures of your build day experience, please be sure to tag @uahabitat and/or @volunteerbama or use #HabitatTuscaloosa

  9. Have fun! 😀

What are ReStore Shifts?

Volunteer opportunities at the Tuscaloosa ReStore!

ReStores are independently-owned reuse stores operated by local Habitat for Humanity organizations. ReStores accept donations and sell a constantly changing inventory of diverse, high-quality merchandise to the public at a fraction of the retail price, while diverting reusable household items and building materials from area landfills.

Sales of donated items help Habitat for Humanity partner with local families to build, rehabilitate and repair safe and affordable homes in your community and around the world — a good deal for you, your community and the environment.

All students and staff are welcome to serve with Habitat for Humanity whether that involves working on the actual construction of a home during a build day, coming to chapter meetings to learn more about our efforts in the local community, or joining us for social events and fundraisers. Participation in build days requires no past building experience: we always have professional builders on build sites ready to teach you new skills or show you the best ways to use your current ones.
